Before becoming deeply engaged with her work in the field of sexuality, Caffyn was primarily identified as an artist, writer and educator. Her work in various media was united by a concern for social issues and community process. In the 1980’s she worked as the editor and publisher of Gallerie, a journal of women artists. In the 1990’s she developed a body of work around the concept of “mapping” home and nature, with large-scale public projects in Vancouver that linked art with environmental and social concerns. The Queermap project, which she began in the late 1990’s and continued to create through 2004, was part of this body of creative work. Caffyn did many presentations and workshops on Mapping Queer Meanings. This website was first published in 2004.
Caffyn is a passionate local activist and was a founding member of Gays and Lesbians of Salt Spring Island (GLOSSI).
